Our faculty member from the Department of Primary Education, Dr. Esra Özcan, has published a single-authored article entitled “Art Movements as Visual Languages for Critical Citizenship in Pre-Service Primary Teacher Education” in Teaching and Teacher Education, an SSCI Q1 journal. The study examines how pre-service primary teachers used art movements including the Renaissance, Romanticism, Realism, Surrealism, and Pop Art as visual languages for expressing social issues and their understandings of citizenship. The findings highlight how art movements can function in teacher education not only as aesthetic or art-historical content, but also as pedagogical resources for engaging with justice, inequality, participation, public responsibility, and critical citizenship. The study further draws attention to the potential of arts-based and reflective practices to support pre-service teachers’ critical citizenship awareness and pedagogical thinking about their future teaching.
